Despite the house TV breaking (an unfortunate occurrence that has
brought home how much it brought us all together at meal times) I have managed to watch more TV today than in the
past month. For some reason I thought it a suitable day to turn on the broadband and catch up with the entire series
of The Armstrongs and the newest episode of Buzzcocks. I don't know what'd got into me - I don't even watch these
programmes.
I went for curry again last night. Jon dropped by early evening and threatened if Tescos was shut
(and it was) that he would have to get take away (so we did). The rest of the evening and this morning onwards was
spent making dissertation progress. I have finally hit the 9000 word point, which is unfortunate, as although it's
the number of words I'm meant to hand in, it's also not covered everything I wanted to say. Being one of those
people who strings together a sentence that lasts two or three sides of A4 is a speciality, so the next task it
taking the lyrical secateurs to my masterpiece.
Jono took me into town briefly, and I managed to rescue my
chequebook which the bank was telling me was getting ever-so-close to being chargrilled, and deposited some other
cheques to top up my rather thin looking balance. Unfortunately spending has gone up recently, while paid work load
has gone down to cope with the run up to graduation. There are all sorts of things like buying discount software
(while still a student), signing up for things at student rates and then all the things like photos and gowns and
al-fresco lunches. It can be very expensive.
Tomorrow I plan to send out the first-drafts.
As it was Easter this weekend it was only fair that I had one day
off. On Saturday I powered through a pile of literature and arguments and managed to bash some kind of discussion
out into Word. Later on I was picked up by Mother who took me back for a curry at Laxy's in Lye on the 'Bridge's
curry mile. As always, it was good nosh, and when I got home I had the benefit of my own bed and the company of the
cat (who is as podgy as always).
Easter morning gave me a lie in before we headed over to Uncle Mike's and
Auntie Gay's for the full works (Auntie Gay does a mean Sunday roast and sweet) before finishing the day with a
walk and Canadian rummy. All very family, but it was really nice to finally get a break from the fine details and
legalities of website access.
I got back to Loughborough at 12ish, had a bite to eat in Sainsbury's and did
some more work. Admittedly the break had broken my pace, but when Jon turned up and told me he hadn't started I
couldn't be anything but enthused to know I have less than 1000 words to complete. My next concern is where to get
it printed and bound. Bruce also got back to me today which means my
designer interviews are now all complete. I really am on the home stretch now.
Sometimes you just need to chill, and I think tonight
was chill night. I finally managed to escape the clutches of the evil excel files and word documents to post a few
letters, pick up a smoothy, some milk and some noodles. I even wore flip flops.
I'm glad that it feels like
summer weather has finally arrived, as apart from the warmth it was getting pretty tedious sitting indoors. At least
now I get the sun on my back (or at least I would, if it was a bit lower in the sky), but a light room to work in is
better than a dark one.
Leon persuaded me to get a few Buds in tonight, and that's what I've done. Nothing
flash, just chillaxing with some tv and poker. Tomorrow is the big push. With Easter one day away, I really need
make sure I'm comfortable with where I'm at before I head home; although it looks like it's only going to be a
one day break. I does actually make me feel pretty gutted when I realise that I've spent what is probably my last
ever holiday (in the school/uni sense of the word) working - with three days off in the past three weeks (that
includes weekends), and I've got one more week of the same to go. It isn't pleasant.
My room is feeling
cosy, which is the alternative way of saying I really need to change my sheets. Washing sort of took a back seat
this week - wearing those sandals to the shops wasn't all to do with sun; it also had something to do with a lack
of clean socks...
The dissertation is coming on. I've got most of the front
end knocked into shape, and now comes the fun bit. I've got start discussing what I've found. There are still a
few patches to be stitched in (Bruce Lawson agreed to have something for me
by Tuesday) but I think I know where I'm going with this. The statistics are pretty interesting too (if you get a
kick out of numbers) but I'm not giving anything away here until publish.
I also discovered the route of my
problem with some CSS header images on the new touchline site. Dave kindly
pointed out that if you use the word 'banner' as the name of a file (and to add insult to injury, the call the
subfolder that as well) certain adblockers on certain clients machines get a bit pokey and start chopping things out
without warning. I will bear that in mind for future reference. It was driving me up the wall for a week.
I'd
talk about the other things going on in my life right now, but I haven't got one right now. I don't think I've
left the house in four days which is not good. I think I'm going to run some errands tomorrow - I hope Tescos is
open on a Bank Holiday...
Today and yesterday have been particularly Hard Work. I've
been researching like mad for the dissertation, and as anyone who has ever accidentally become addicted to Wikipedia
will know, it's like getting trapped on an infinite loop of knowledge and wisdom acquisition. The more you absorb,
the bigger your headache gets until you have to go and eat something to distract yourself. This is not good for the
body or for the dissertation.
This said, I've got a decent number of replies to my questionnaire (however
less than I had hoped initially). The problem now is the dissection of the masses of blog posts and journal entries
I'm trawling through in order to cobble together some comprehensible rubbish. You've probably already have noticed
that I'm positively overflowing with words that haven't been used since 1952.
Also word related, I thought
I'd share some of the interesting things that Google Analytics has pulled in for me in the past three weeks since
my initiation so graciously arrived in my Junk Mail. It is odd to think why people might possibly locate me using
some of the odd combinations these Google searches consist of. But search they do, and my site continues to respond.
Here are my favourite things that if you search for will bring you back here...
- Zeppelin
cider
- totty
- vis a vis cotteridge
- benji bridge convention
- gynaecologist operation
figure like virgin
- sex traffikers
- egotistical bastard
- beer-o-matic
I'm quite
pleased that egotistical bastard is up there, although I'm not entirely sure why. I am also intrigued to know what
I have to do with sex trafficking, as I don't think it's generally one of those things you get into without
noticing it.

Everyone knows Bad Things are always
counteracted by Good Things because the people at Muller say so. For example, yesterday I worked flat out trying to
try and build an accessible ticker tape (yes, yes, it's a client requirement) into a site, and then the rest of my
day trying to figure out the most obscure of internet loading problems - why I could see the site, why BrowserCam
could see the site, but why my client could not. It wouldn't be such a mystery if I hadn't tried it on two separate
servers, got him to install Firefox and try it on that, as well as we're both running the same version of IE6. I am
still none the wiser, gave up and went to watch Ice Age 2 which was a much needed pep-up.
This morning however
I am on the upside of yesterday's frustrations. I was incredibly pleased to be asked by John whether I would like to be 'pimped' on Joshuaink. As
if he hadn't already been helpful enough with my dissertation. I am well chuffed. Today could be a really good
day.
Oh, and if anyone coming from that way wants to know why this blog isn't particularly accessible, looks
crap with stylesheets on anything apart from FF and IE or anything like that I'm going to take the cowards route
and say "I haven't got enough time right now; I'm writing a dissertation don't you
know."
When you wake up at 1.30pm, you know the alarm clock didn't work
properly.
I've spent the remaining light hours of the day sorting out the last parts of the TouchLine Soccer
site and learning some PHP. It's so annoying having to learn a whole new set of syntax, but it's even more
annoying finding Leon's computer upstairs leeching all the bandwidth - I only found out why everything was running
so slow half an hour ago.
I managed to go shopping yesterday. It was probably the best idea that I had all day
as it was becoming incredibly hard to live off Alpen bars, Mini Cheddars and Tesco own brand squash. I though I'd
treat myself and did a chicken satay and macaroons for afters. I think that maybe the first time in history anyone
has ever had a meal that consisted of satay and macaroons. I like to think of myself bohemian.
I'm fully up
to scratch with Lost, the Apprentice and the OC which means there should be no further distractions. I hope. I
really hope.
